I’ve been brewing a while on an idea of a quilt along for my Value Quilt Tutorial.  I think the time has come.

And because even the longest journey begins with a single step (or steps in this quilt), I thought I’d give you all a heads-up and some planning time before we all jump in.

What you’ll need:

* Quilting Wall: You will need to see your work from a distance on this one.  Value is best determined from a distance.  Vertically seeing your work will help a lot.  Buy one or craft yourself one.  Blair of Wisecraft does it well here.  I suppose you could make do without, but try for one.  It will be indispensable to you once you’ve used it.  Even a flannel sheet will work.  I just tack mine to the wall.

*Mass array of fabrics: Lights, medium and dark in value.  Cut into squares (I’m doing 6-inch).  Take a good look at your stash.  You most likely have a lot that are medium in value. This is the time to hit the fabric swap groups, or buy those FQs you’ve always wanted!  Try to fill in the gaps by buying the values you don’t have much of.  Start cutting!

*Amount of fabrics: I will be doing 12 rows up and 12 across for a family sized quilt.  Two squares will make two identical squares.  For less of a commitment try a baby quilt.

*Square template (6-inch or smaller).

*The rest is the usual quilting stuff.

There are some examples on the  Values Quilt Flickr Group.  Some are less “distracting” in their use of print and use a solid as the light.  For those of you with less stash this might be a good start.

You are also not stuck to the diamond shape of my example.  By switching the squares around you could easily create a different look.  Maybe light and dark lines?  I was thinking of perhaps making a bunch of squares and then sashing them.  Similar to these I made for the Ten Make Two Bee:

It’s finished.   I was never able to see the finished product, as it was mailed straight from my quilter Lori (steinquilts@yahoo.com) to my dear friend Kara for her wedding.  There’s no way I would have quilted this in time and in this manner by myself.

Kara moved into my old house when she was three, our family built a house next door.  Many days of our youth were spent in the yards and woods together.  Sadly we can’t make it to her wedding in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

So here’s the line up for each rectangle:  Kona solid rectangles surrounded by improv print piecing, linen, Kona again in a color followed by natural Kona.  Added one print and then linen again.  The final layer wraps them all in natural Kona.

It will lay on the bed the other direction, more hopscotch style and the binding is Cake Rock Beach dots in the green.  A little hard to see in the picture.  More photos of that and the back to come.

One more shall we?

I am so thrilled with how it turned out.

I’m in several quilting bees, and have pressed it to the last minute on them this month.  I still have a dreaded house to do tonight.  I’m not a fan of those houses.

I loved making these and am hoping to get a Values Quilt Quilt-A-Long going by October.  The smaller blocks are so fun.  I liked the idea of making a whole quilt with a mix of blocks, each using two colors and sashed in grey or a natural.  We’ll see if it culminates.

My Sunday Stash and Sunday Swap is Robert Kaufman’s “Sugar and Spice.”  I have a FQ of each.  I would love the more purple blue colorway of this.  Am on the hunt for Alexander Henry’s and Kaffe Fassett’s lately, but I am open.

I’ll come up with a button here in a few, but would you all fancy the ritual of a Sunday Fabric Swap?   Maybe added into your post for the Sunday Stash?  Just give the photo,  the quantity, and what you’re on the hunt for.

I created a Flickr group here.

I’m all over THIS fabric swapping Flickr group.  Thought something less obsessive for me, like a once a week thing, could fit into my computer time perfectly,  AND keep me focused more on life.

Sorry, I’m out this week due to my SOLO vacation to New Mexico (insert “YEAH” here.),but if you are in, I’ll try my best to compile a list of Bloggers who are all about it.

Happy Hunting!

Katie

My dear friend has waited 51 years to meet the right man, and I was able to attend her bridal shower on Saturday.  We have a personal joke about aprons, so I made her my typical Lotta Jansdotter apron, and a HER and HIM pillow.  Her tastes are all over the map and she’s fun, so I went with this idea I had.  I loved how the lion is gazing at her.

There are some fabrics I used that I might perish when they are used up.  The Alexander Henry Sun Signs panel.  It’s impossible to find now.  I’ve used it before for this little girl birthday pillow. (BTW Does anyone know the name of the large purple flower fabric?)    And the Alexander Henry Decor fabric is a favorite for pillow backs.  It’s so versatile.

The Alexander Arvika in black and white…only bits left.

3738973686_1a736053c5The Denyse Schmidt Flea Market Fancy Barbell in yellow that I traded most away for who knows what.  What was I thinking?  Not to mention the black and white little abstract squares with the lines…anyone know the name?

Oh, It’s just fabric, but you know when it speaks to you?

Like these two Amy Butler’s, draped together on my chair, waiting to go to a swap partner.  I was inspired.

Paired perfectly for my nine-patch.  I haven’t forgotten you either nine-patch.  I’ve been slowly collecting and swapping for the Amy Butler Charm that I didn’t have stashed.

Unfortunately, my one a day nine-patch is more of a two a month, but it’s working out for us.

Happy Monday!  I have to go work on Wedding Quilts.

I joined another quilting bee named Ten Make Two.  The Bee is hosted by I’m a Ginger Monkey (Katy). I think this bee is rather genious.  You use your own fabric rather than mailing back and forth.  Often,  I get an idea in my head for the block I want and I can’t make it because I lack the lengths, widths, or values I need.  Having my own fabric to choose from cuts back on this frustration.

I love Lululollylegs block.  She picked the Bento Box Quilt.  She, as I, was inspired by Pink Chalk’s Bento Quilt.  I’ve had the pattern for ages and had been collecting pink and orange fabric to produce a similar quilt.  Easy enough to whip up some requested orange and pink blocks!

The first I used some fuscia too:

The values contrasted nicely in this block.  The next I went a bit lighter in value.  My top left didn’t quite have the contrast that I needed to make the square shine.  I could have used a bit darker value, but it’s still lovely and just needs to be placed next to something solid, or way lighter or darker in value to make it pop.  I was able to use it as an example of contrast (value) in my class last night.

Regardless, the blocks were super easy.  I’m a bit addicted to this pattern I think.

For you fabricheads out there, I bought some out of print Cake, Rock, Beach waves and dots on clearance here.  Five dollars a yard!

I saw this pillow in CB2.  I liked the concept, and added it to the inspiration board.

Rainbow was the theme for Hot Butter’s May Block.  So I mixed it with the patchwork:

I really loved its look from a distance.  I added the mermaids to the top since I was watching Heather Ross on Martha.  How domestic can I get…gag…

I’ve been in production mode on pillows lately.  I’ll be teaching an Improv Patchwork Workshop at The Quilting Loft here in Seattle, and in Bellevue at Quiltworks Northwest, and needed some samples for the shops.  Pillows seemed perfect as examples of improv piecing.

Inspired by this lady.

This one below was inspired by this lovely lady:

and of course the backs:

My Sewing Teacher friend Cheryl Kuczek first taught me pillows.  She offers a pattern, “Perfect Pillows” that I have always followed.  She will be offering follow up pillow classes to my piecework classes.  Do not fear the zipper!  Her business Paradiso Designs offers a variety of stellar bag patterns.  Check out her article in Craftsylish too!

I picked up a current copy of Quilting Arts’ Stitch Magazine today, and what’s inside?  A bunch of awesome pillows.  Quick, go make yourself some fluff!

Squeezed in a block before my run last night.

That makes five.  Need to work a bit on the wedding quilt and some birthday pillows today.  Here’s the flock so far:

We had margaritas last night on the porch with a friend from Flagstaff, that now lives in Redmond.  He is also keeper of my old girl, Fe Dog.  She and I spent ten glorious years together before baby and city life.  We found each other at the pound in Detroit on my 25th birthday.  She lived with me in Ann Arbor, moved to Flagstaff, traveled all over the country and drove through out Mexico together.

Seattle leash life was not her liking, nor small babies…so sadly, back to Flagstaff she went to live with her other love, my friend Doug.  Now she’s lived in Bend and Portland.  I think Redmond will be her resting place.  It was so nice to see her, but she’s sooooo old and scrappy. She’ll stay with us for a few days next week.

Have a SUNSHINE filled Saturday.  That’s what I’m wishing for!

Kaffe Fasset Clouds

It’s actually Saturday, not Sunday for me.  It’s raining.  I shouldn’t even be posting, I need to be getting ready for our friends from Alaska to arrive.  Four fun filled days of eating, drinking and cohabitating in my 700 square foot house with 5 other people.

It involves packing up the studio part of my “Livudio” (that’s what we call our living room/studio).

I’ve had some “drafts” for wedding quilts happening in the Livudio.

The Kaffe Fasset Clouds, and the Jewel tone Carolina Chambray above, I will make into a wedding quilt, perfect for their room.  The idea came easy, and I’ve stuck with it.  The design will be similar to this one last Fall, but the clouds will be center stage of the squares.  Sashing will be the vibrant, rich red.

2957325512_d417d60900

I’ve also been messing with some ideas for a wedding quilt that needs to be finished by Fall.  Nothing is concrete yet, except for the colors.  I went with blue, green and gray.

dsc_0085

I’ve been very inspired by quilts with green lately, and gray is lovely in so much right now.  Especially inspiring for me right now are this, this and this.

I’m big on just cutting, sewing and seeing what works.  A million ideas go through my head before the final collimation of a quilt.  I guess I’ve mostly always done what’s now called Improvisation quilting.

Here’s some peeks.  Have a good weekend!
